TARRYTOWN, N.Y. - Andrea Rebello, the 21-year-old Tarrytown woman killed Friday during a home invasion on Long Island, was being used by the intruder as a human shield, published reports said.

Rebello was being held in a headlock Friday night by Dalton Smith, 30, an ex-con who broke into the home, according to the Daily News. The paper quoted officials as saying Smith told cops "I'm going to kill her," and pointing a gun at a police officer.

A Nassau County police officer fired eight rounds at Smith, one of which struck Rebello in the head.

Rebello was a graduate of Sleepy Hollow High School. She is survived by her parents Fernando and Nella, her twin sister and best friend Jessica, who was in the house in Uniondale, Long Island during the shooting, and her extended family of grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins in Portugal.

Visitation will be at Coffey Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4  to 8 p.m.. Her Funeral Mass will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Teresa of Avila Church with interment to follow in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
