SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. Sleepy Hollow High opens the 2012 Section 1 football playoffs Thursday at 3 p.m. when it hosts Saunders.
The Horsemen earned the second seed in Class A League 1 and finished with a 6-1 record. The last win came against bitter rival Ossining on Friday night.
The game did not count in the league standings, but quarterback Devin Lopez said the 34-21 victory would help the Horsemen as the playoffs begin.
Huge momentum, Lopez said. Cant wait 'til playoffs next week. This win definitely gives us a boost.
Sleepy Hollows lone loss came against Harrison, 31-8, in week three. But since that game, the Horsemen have outscored opponents 156-81 in four straight victories.
The Horsemen and Pride recently renewed a rivalry that dates to 1955. Before Friday, Sleepy Hollows last victory against Ossining came in 1983. Ossining won seven straight years from 1984 to 1990. The rivalry then went on hiatus until 2008, when Ossining won again. The two teams did not meet in 2009 or 2010, but Ossining won yet again in 2011.
Sleepy Hollow could not have asked for a better game in which to prepare for the intensity of the playoffs. The rivalry with Ossining is once again picking up steam, Sleepy Hollow head coach Steve Borys said.
The communities, it doesnt sound like they missed a beat, Borys said. Theyve been going bananas about this. Weve got old timers dragging themselves out with their canes. Theyre coming out of the woodwork.
If the Horsemen maintain their composure and play like they did Friday, they could be tough to beat.
