“We are thrilled to welcome back our students to a year of enriching learning,” Superintendent of Schools Kristopher Harrison said. “There is such a positive energy present in each of our schools.”
Classrooms and hallways were buzzing with excitement as middle and high school students looked for their lockers, compared schedules and connected with their peers. Harrison said the teachers’ and students’ motivation on the first day of school provides for an outstanding foundation for a successful year.
“I’m excited to see my friends because the summer was really long,” seventh-grader Anika Manchanda said.
Meanwhile, Dows Lane Elementary School Principal Deborah Mariniello greeted the younger students and kindergarteners as they met their teachers for the first time. Mariniello, who is the school’s new principal, said she chose to wear yellow as a play on words with her last name and hoped to make it easier for students to learn her name.
“The first day of school brings a lot of excitement,” said Mariniello. “It brings the sounds of learning back to school. This is what it’s all about.”
Harrison said the district has welcomed more than 65 new families and their children to the Irvington school community this year.
