There was an emergency closing of the K-8 Paideia School 15 in Yonkers on Monday, Sept. 24, when ceiling tiles tested positive for mold. Since the mold outbreak, older students above grade four are going to St. Bartholomew School on Saw Mill River Road, while the younger students have been attending the Robert C. Dodson School on Avondale Road.

Schools Superintendent Edwin Quezada issued an update on Thursday, Oct. 4, reporting that air sample testing took place and the lab reported that all areas of Paideia are cleared for reoccupancy.

Paideia remains under construction as crews continue a full roof replacement, interior restoration and equipment upgrades. During the construction, there will be additional cleaning efforts taken up inside the areas impacted by mold.

According to the Yonkers Council of PTA/PTSAs, “instruction at St. Bartholomew and Dodson is going well, supplies and materials have been delivered, and technology provided.” Internet connectivity at St. Bartholomew is scheduled to be in place by the end of the week.

According to a CBS report, an expert said that the wet summer and bountiful rain led to a moisture building that encouraged the growth of the mold, with became pervasive.  The building serves approximately 576 students and 84 faculty and administrative staff members.

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano added that, '“we have been working very closely with the District to ensure that the safety and well-being of our students remain paramount. Relocating the students while Paideia School 15 is being remediated is in the best interest of our students and staff.

"I commend the Board of Education and the Superintendent for acting swiftly and efficiently while dealing with this sensitive matter.”
