With schools set to open in the coming days, the Mount Vernon Board of Education announced that Rodney McBride, an established school principal from Maryland, has been tabbed to take over at the middle school.

According to the Board of Education, as the new principal of Benjamin Turner Middle School, McBride will be responsible for the development, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of a comprehensive program of educational and student services.

“His responsibilities will include working to create a school culture that promotes the ongoing improvement of learning and teaching for students and staff; demonstrating commitment to closing the achievement gap; and assisting instructional staff with alignment of curriculum, instruction and assessment with state and local district learning goals; among others. He will also serve as an advocate for the staff, school, and school community.”

In a statement, Schools Superintendent Kenneth Hamilton said, “I am excited to have Mr. McBride work in conjunction with the community of teachers, faculty, and staff at Benjamin Turner to create a positive and academically-stimulating environment for its students. “His experience and proven leadership skills – as both an administrator and a community member – will be a valuable asset to our district.”

Before taking his talents to Mount Vernon, McBridge served as a comprehensive middle school principal, where he was in charge of more than 1,200 students in grades six through eight in Prince George, Md., for five years.

“I was impressed with Superintendent Hamilton and his 20/20 Vision for the district,” McBride said. “But when I interviewed for the position, it was more than just numbers, more than just talk; Mount Vernon immediately felt like home.”
