Irvington Fifth-Graders Discuss Book With Students From Around The World

IRVINGTON, N.Y. -- Students at Irvington's Main Street School who are reading “The Not Perfect Hat Club” are discussing it with peers from around the world.

For the global project, fifth-graders in Susan Wallace’s class are using their new ChromeBooks to blog with students from Argentina. They’re involved in Google Hangouts and Google Hangouts on Air, as well as blogging and using GoogleDocs to communicate with other students from around the world. The students also listened to live readings from the book's author, Jena Ball.

There are about 11 countries and 105 schools worldwide participating in the literary project.

“Reading and discussing the book already has students thinking about questions pertaining to Irvington and how we compare to schools in so many other countries,” Wallace said. “This book is based on not being perfect and accepting the differences of others and our own imperfections.”

Through the book’s message, Wallace added, the students are learning that no matter where they live, people around the world are all the same.
