Byron Newhall, 90, White Plains Chemist, WWII Vet

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Byron Hawks Newhall, a lifelong White Plains resident, died Tuesday, July 17, at Westchester Medical Center after a brief illness. He was 90. 

Born March 31, 1922, in Greenfield, Mass., he was the son of Jennie and Charles Sanderson. Newhall was an active member of First Baptist Church in White Plains. He spent his career as a chemist with Union Carbide in Tonawanda, N.Y., before transferring to White Plains in the early 1960s. 

Newhall was a retired lieutenant in the United States Navy Reserve. He served aboard the USS Wichita in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was married to Mildred Duprat Newhall, who died in 2006. They married in 1944 at the United States Naval Academy. 

Newhall is survived by a daughter, Priscilla (David) Stonehouse, of Sanford, Fla.; a son, Nathan (Amy) Newhall, of Stamford, Conn.; four grandsons and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Russell; and a grandson, David M. D'Aloia. 

Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Ballard-Durand Funeral Home in White Plains. A service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Clarksburg Cemetery in Clarksburg, Mass.
