GREENWICH, Conn. Whitby Schools 50th commencement featured the largest class in recent years with 19 graduates at the June 7 ceremony on its campus in backcountry Greenwich.
Whitby, a Montessori and International Baccalaureate private school, kept with its tradition of having a Whitby graduate as commencement speaker with local entrepreneur Sonia Sotire Malloy of the Class of 1986.
Sotire Malloy, who owns the Greenwich stores Splurge and Splurge Kids, was named small businessperson of the year in 2009 by the Greenwich Chamber of Commerce. In her speech to the graduates, she stressed how her academic and personal experiences at Whitby gave her the tools to pursue her entrepreneurial dreams.
The highlight of the ceremony was the individual student addresses in which they recounted their many experiences and memories of Whitby. The graduates presented the school with two teak benches for the Whitby playing fields so that as alumni, they can return to campus and cheer on the Whitby Wildcats.
Before the diplomas were conferred by Barbara Brent and Nely Miguel, interim co-heads of school, and Patricia Franklin, chairman of the Whitby Board of Trustees, the students were serenaded by the sibling chorus, which performed Friends by Elton John.
In the fall, graduates will be attending Phillips Andover Academy, King, Iona Preparatory School, Hopkins School, Greenwich High School, Archbishop Stepinac High School, Greens Farms Academy, Mamaroneck High School, Del Mar School in California, and Waldheim in the Netherlands.
