Joan Hartley, 81, lived in Croton and worked as a volunteer with the hospital.
Hartley died around 1 p.m. after beings struck by a pick-up truck equipped with a plow that was backing up when it hit her. She sustained injuries to her lower body and her head. The truck was being driven by a Phelps employee.
Phelps Memorial Hospital, in a statement yesterday, said it was saddened by the death of a member of its volunteer staff.
“We are deeply saddened and distressed by the tragic accident that occurred on our hospital grounds this morning that involved a member of our volunteer staff," a statement sent by Mary Sernatinger, hospital spokesperson, said. "Our hearts go out to the family of this wonderful woman who has been a valued volunteer for many years. We are cooperating fully with the police who are investigating this matter.”
