The Mahopac Falls Fire Department was dispatched to the Red Mills Shell station on Route 6N on a report of a "car fire next to the gas pumps," according to fire officials. Firefighters responded with a full assignment, in addition to multiple units from Carmel Police.

The first units arriving on the scene found a pickup truck with the engine compartment on fire at the bottom of the gas station's parking area. Incident Command Assistant Chief Jeff Boyle dedicated the first due engine to handle the fire and had all other responding units stand by at headquarters.

Fire police closed off the main entrance to the station for the safety of the firefighters, while officers from Carmel Police began investigating the cause of the fire.
