TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow and Irvington residents couldn't catch a break at the end of October when Hurricane Sandy decided to blow our way.

The storm flooded waterfront areas, downed hundreds of trees, shut off power to thousands in the villages and caused millions in damages. The Irving neighborhood in Tarrytown is suing Con Edison after being left in the dark for 11 days after Sandy.

Halloween trick-or-treating was postponed for several days while cleanup took place.

Flooding closed three Irvington restaurants for several weeks and caused a Hudson River sewage leak. At local marinas, the storm caused some boats to float up and away from their secure spots.

Schools were closed for several days, putting vacations at risk because New York State requires 180 days of instruction. Both Irvington and Pocantico Hills have added days to the district calendars.

Gas shortages were reported throughout the region after the storm as people fueled their cars and generators.

Residents did not forget others, though, making several donation drives and trips to hard-hit areas of the metropolitan region. Community shelters were set up, and several businesses offered their power outlets for residents without power.
