Sleepy Hollow Races Rubber Ducks for Rotary Club

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – Two costumed yellow ducks dumped nearly 2,000 rubber duckies into Andre Brook on Saturday for a good cause.

The Rotary Club of the Tarrytowns hosted its annual Rubber Ducky Derby during the YMCA Healthy Kids Day at Patriots Park. Hundreds of people came out to watch as members of the Tarrytown Fire Department helped the yellow bath toys race to the finish line.

“It's great for the kids,” Rotary Club Treasurer Alan Guarino said. “It's a lot of fun. It's a draw for a lot of the parents because kids want to see the ducks. They like seeing them go down the creek like that.”

Saturday's Duck Derby was held in memory of the late Tarrytown Fire Chief Joseph F. McCarthy. The race included six qualifying trials and one final race for the six trial winners. Residents adopted ducks from the Rotary Club, with winners earning a variety of prizes. Ducks were $10 a head, $50 for a six-quack and $100 for a baker's dozen. Profits from the duck adoptions will go to the Rotary Club's grants and scholarships.

Guarino said this year's duck sales had gone “way up.”

“We're almost up to $1,700, which is more than we've done in the last few years,” he said.

Guarino cited the good weather and community support for the event's success.

In addition the the derby, the YMCA raised money and awareness through a variety of activities as part of the YMCA's Healthy Kids Day. Residents listened to live bands, sampled food and visited various sponsor booths. Children learned how to skateboard, tested their field hockey skills, and enjoyed moon bounces and slides.
