Detonation Planned Friday In Tappan Zee Bridge Testing

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – Residents who live near the Tappan Zee Bridge may hear noise from a test detonation Friday morning between 10 a.m. and noon, the New York State Thruway announced Wednesday afternoon.

The detonation is a one-time test to examine the sub-bottom conditions of the Hudson River in preparation for a new Tappan Zee Bridge, Thruway officials said.

Crews will set off the detonation near the Rockland County side of the river. The vibration from the test will measure soil stability in the river bed, officials said.

The test detonation will not affect Tappan Zee Bridge traffic. Thruway officials said marine traffic on the river would be halted within a 500-foot buffer zone when the test occurs.
