Con Edison Plans Major Projects in Sleepy Hollow

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – Con Edison is gearing up for some major projects in Sleepy Hollow, village officials said during a recent board of trustees meeting.

The gas company has already been replacing lines on Maple and Spruce Streets. In April, they're expected to begin replacing every gas line in Philipse Manor.

“This is a huge inconvenience to the residents, so we're going to try to do what we can to prevent the inconvenience from being too bad,” Village Administrator Anthony Giaccio said. “They have to replace every line on every street.”

Giaccio noted Con Edison will provide a more specific date as the project gets closer.

General Foreman Richard Gross explained that the gas line replace involves digging into the neighborhood's streets to replace the main gas line with a plastic gas main. Con Edison will also replace gas lines to each house, meaning they'll need to work with homeowners, Gross said, noting that Con Edison will be snaking in the new pipe through the old pipe.

“They're going to do section by section: Broadway to Bellwood, Bellwood to Munroe,” Gross said.

Gross said homeowners should not expect to lose gas because the old main will stay in while crews put in the new main line. But he noted the biggest disruption will be crews digging into roads.

“We made them guarantee us that when they finish with the street, it will be milled down and paved on the section they put the patch in, so it's not going to look like a checkerboard,” he said, adding that crews will not be disturbing the curbs.

Village Architect Sean McCarthy said Con Edison also has plans to change gas lines in the inter-village area from medium- to high-pressured lines, including Beekman Avenue. Gross noted that Con Edison will wait to begin that project until school ends to reduce complications with school traffic.
