Businesses Want Tarrytown To Shop Locally This Saturday

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – Small businesses are important to a thriving community, John Sardy, executive director of the Sleepy Hollow-Tarrytown Chamber of Commerce, says.

“It's key in allowing a village to grow economically — and it helps real estate,” Sardy said.

Residents and businesses in Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow and Irvington will celebrate the third annual Small Business Saturday this holiday weekend. The day is preceded by Black Friday and followed by Cyber Monday. The idea, first used as a promotion by American Express, is to support small businesses during one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year.

Sardy says the Chamber of Commerce works to promote the shop local movement year-round and especially during the holiday season. Local businesses help the community in several ways, such as tax revenue, jobs and atmosphere, he said.

“What I find from people coming into the visitors center, they love Tarrytown because it's vibrant,” he said. “That's where it has been repeated over and over again more than I've ever heard. It adds to the dynamic of what we have.”

Marsha Gordon, president and CEO of the Business Council of Westchester, says things like Small Business Saturday can help local businesses compete with larger retailers.

“With so many retailers offering deep discounts and opening their doors on Black Friday or even on Thanksgiving night, it is difficult for smaller retailers to compete,” she said. “This Saturday, we will be supporting the smaller shops in our county, many of whom are our members, and we urge residents to do the same. It is crucial that we support these businesses to keep our local economy moving.”
