IRVINGTON/SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – The Irvington High School girls basketball team won a third straight state title and the Sleepy Hollow football team surprised area teams as the 2012 sports year brought the expected and unexpected to the area.
Irvington's Bulldogs rode their three-year wave by rolling through Section 1 local teams and capturing the New York State Public Schools and Federation Class B (all schools) championships under coach Gina Maher. The Bulldogs were a balanced basketball machine with juniors Lexi Martins and Brittni Lai and senior Marley Giddins leading the way.
Maher, who was inducted into the New York State Coaches Hall of Fame in 2010 and has won more than 500 games over her 35-year career, won her fourth state title.
Sleepy Hollow football coach Steve Borys predicted in the early season that his team had the skill players and heart to be a contender. The Horsemen, with quarterback Devin Lopez and running back Ronniel Munoz igniting the offense, ran to a record of 8-2 and reached the Class A semifinal before losing to eventual Class A champ Somers.
Sleepy Hollow soccer and track and field athlete Gillian Berger placed third in the long jump in the Division 1 section among public school athletes at the New York State Track and Field Meet. She also won league titles in the long jump, triple jump and 100-meter dash.
