Sleepy Hollow Outguns John Jay In Football Win

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. — A quick two-touchdown lead in the first half evaporated within minutes for the Sleepy Hollow varsity football team Saturday, but John Jay-Cross River's one-point lead midway through the second quarter was short-lived.

Sleepy Hollow’s offense kicked back into gear, and the game turned into a shootout. Quarterback Devin Lopez and wide receiver Dionel Infante connected on two touchdowns in the final four minutes of the first half, sending Sleepy Hollow off to a wild 43-36 victory in a Section 1 Class A football game.

Sleepy Hollow improved to 3-1 and is strengthening its hold on a playoff berth with three games remaining. The Headless Horsemen play Hen Hud Saturday.

John Jay dropped to 2-2 and will host Rye Saturday.

“This was a full team effort today,” Lopez said. “Both teams came out strong, and it was a high-scoring game.”

John Jay was resilient, rallying in the second half after trailing 25-14 at halftime. The Indians had the ball in the final 90 seconds, but Sleepy Hollow held fast.

Sleepy Hollow wanted to establish its offense, especially after an eight-point effort against Harrison in its previous game.

“We had a great week of practice and we wanted to show it today,” said Lopez, who had four scoring strikes and two touchdown runs. “We put in a new formation and we were able to run the ball with power. And with Dominic’s speed, he was able to turn the corner and take advantage of it.”

Onwe had a 77-yard touchdown run and scored on a 35-yard hook-and-lateral.

“We had a lot more confidence in ourselves this game,” Lopez said. “We know what we can do on offense and today we did that because it was about people stepping up.”

Onwe agreed with Lopez.

“We were clicking from the beginning,” Onwe said. “This was our first home game and we wanted to give our crowd a show.”
