Sleepy Hollow Football Strives For 3-0 Record

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. -- Sleepy Hollow goes into its Section 1 Class A football game with Harrison at 7 p.m. Friday riding a momentum wave.

The Headless Horsemen are 2-0 and coming off a 14-0 victory at Rye last week. Sleepy Hollow’s defense intercepted two passes, returning one for a touchdown.

“We beat Harrison two years ago but that was then,” said Sleepy Hollow senior Steven Bencosme. “We have been focused this week in practice and we know a lot about their offense and how good it is.”

Harrison, also 2-0, erupted for 28 points in the second half last week in a 35-24 win against John Jay-Cross River. Quarterback Vinnie Nicita threw for 126 yards and fullback Kevin Nathanson rushed for 105 yards, both in the second half, rallying the Huskies from a 34-7 deficit

“We will have to step it up on defense because we are playing against Harrison’s triple option,” Bencosme said.

This is the second game in a grueling three-week stretch for Sleepy Hollow. Following Harrison, Sleepy Hollow will host John Jay-Cross River Sept. 29.

“It is interesting how the schedule was made up with us playing Rye and Harrison consecutively,” Bencosme said. “People are saying Sleepy Hollow got lucky against Rye. This is another big game for us and this will be a big step for our season and the program if we win.”
