SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. The Sleepy Hollow High School football team will travel to Ossining for a game Friday at 7 p.m. that will continue one of the most bitter rivalries in Section 1.
The two teams will meet for the 39th time with the series tied at 18-18-2. The rivalry began in 1955, and Ossining has won the last nine meetings dating back to 1984. The Horsemen and Pride did not play from 1991 through 2007 and in 2009 and 2010 because of different enrollment figures.
Ossining overcame a 20-13 deficit last season and defeated the Horsemen, 25-20. But this season could be different.
Sleepy Hollow has been the surprise team in Section 1 this year. The Horsemen have a 5-1 record and are fresh off a come-from-behind 42-21 win against Lakeland.
Ossining was on its way to a promising win against Poughkeepsie, as junior quarterback Justin Davidov had thrown for 129 yards and three touchdowns and had rushed for 90 yards midway through the quarter. The Pride had a 20-6 lead, but Davidov suffered a fractured ankle and left the game. Ossining then gave up 22 straight points and lost, 28-20.
The loss of Davidov undoubtedly hurts Ossining, as the junior has been stellar for the Pride under center. He amassed 695 passing yards and 13 passing touchdowns along with 229 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns.
The Horsemen are first with 3.5 points in the Class A League 1 Piner standings, which Section 1 uses to determine playoff teams and seeding. The Pride is 10th in the League 2 Piner standings with -0.62 points. The top four teams in each of the two Class A leagues make the playoffs.
The game will not count in the Piner standings because the teams are in different leagues, but bragging rights will most definitely be on the line in a rivalry that has been renewed in recent years and has started to heat up yet again.
