McKay and Fincher combined to score 14 of Gorton’s 16 points in the forth quarter, propelling the Wolves to a 44-31 win in a first-round game of the 21st annual Howard Godwin Sleepy Hollow Holiday Basketball Tournament.
Gorton will defend its title against Edgemont in the title game at 8 p.m. Saturday. Sleepy Hollow meets Hackley in the consolation game at 4 p.m. Saturday.
Fincher finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds. McKay added 12 points and six assists as the Wolves defeated former Gorton coach Rob Rizzo for the second consecutive year.
“This was the second time we were playing Sleepy Hollow, but it was still weird because you hear his voice, but for a different team and different colors,” said McKay, who played for Rizzo his freshman year.
Williamson had scored seven points, but foul problems limited his playing time, especially in the second half. “When one of your best players goes down, someone has to step up,” McKay said.
McKay and Fincher collaborated on a pair of alley-oops in the fourth quarter, reinforcing Gorton’s double-digit lead.
Gorton found itself in a deep hole early in the game, trailing 9-0 six minutes in. The Wolves worked their way back before taking the lead, 18-15, on a McKay three-pointer with one minute remaining in the first half.
In the second half, Gorton turned up the intensity, disrupting Sleepy Hollow’s half-court offense.
“Once we picked up our defensive intensity, it led to our offense because we started getting turnovers and took them out of their offense and their comfort zone,” McKay said.
Nicky Arduino led Sleepy Hollow with 14 points and Alex Laub finished with 10.
