Irvington Girls Grab 4th Straight Section 1 Basketball Title

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - Irvington's three-time defending state champion girls basketball team won its fourth straight Section 1 title Saturday with a runaway 73-44 victory over Blind Brook.

Lexi Martins had game highs of 33 points and 25 rebounds for Irvington as the Bulldogs shook of a slow start to run past the Trojans from Blind Brook. Martins was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

Brittni Lai scored 13 points for the Bulldogs in the second quarter to help forge a 28-19 halftime lead after trailing 8-6 at the end of one quarter. Lai finished with 22 points and 10 assists.

The Bulldogs, who outscored Blind Brook 45-25 in the second half, won their 11th Section 1 championship under coach Gina Maher, whose teams won seven straight Class C titles from 1984-1990.

The Blind Brook defense, led by center Jackie Lavitt and forward Ali Silfen, set the tone early in the game, holding the high-scoring Bulldogs offense down to take the 8-6 lead.

Silfen led Blind Brook with 24 points and 14 rebounds and Lea Saliba added 14, including 10 in the first half.

Irvington advanced to next week's Class B state regional semifinals and will be looking for a fourth consecutive state championship.
