Hackley's Shaw Finds Wrestling Camp for Him

CROSS RIVER, N.Y. -- Following a successful sophomore year on the Hackley wrestling team, Daniel Shaw was looking for wrestling camps to attend this summer.

He heard about the New York State Wrestling Camp through Hackley coach Fran Stanek. Shaw, who is a Harrison resident, took Stanek up on the suggestion. He also learned that teammate Justin Seim would be working as a counselor at the camp. Those were both good reasons for Shaw to sign up for the camp, which runs through Thursday at John Jay-Cross River High School.

Five-time New York State champion and four-time NCAA all-America Troy Nickerson is the featured clinician. Former Mahopac great, 1999 state champion and two-time all-America at Cornell, Joe Mazzurco, will be running the Thursday night session.

“I didn’t know anything about the camp other than Coach (John) Degl was one of the counselors and that Justin was going to be here,” said Shaw, who was preparing to eat his lunch after the three-hour morning session. “Justin is a very good wrestler and I want to get to the level that he is at by doing the training that he does.”

Shaw’s counselor was Fox Lane senior Danny Ventura, the 2011 Section 1 and New York State large-school 119-pound runner-up. He was attentive with Ventura, especially when Nickerson spoke to the entire group.

“He provides a lot of high school and college experience and he is showing us the technique that he has learned through the years,” Shaw said of Nickerson. “It’s good wrestling because it keeps you moving and you’re learning good technique. We are focusing on chain wrestling and working on finishing our takedowns.”
