TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – The Hackley varsity wrestling team continued with its excellent season Saturday, coming away from the Ivy League Wrestling Championships with three individual Ivy League champions and sharing the team title.

The Hornets finished in a three-way tie with Poly Prep and Horace Mann for the Ivy regular-season title. Hackley coach Fran Stanek said Hackley beat Poly Prep, but lost to Horace Mann, and Poly Prep defeated Horace Mann.

Hackley’s three champions were Stephen Zak (120 pounds), Andre Newland (145) and Damis Yancopoulos (160) as the Hornets placed third in the Ivy League Championships.

The Hornets also had five runners-up – George Germanokos (113 pounds), Sam Welch (126), Elijah Ngbokoli (152), Rodrigo Mejias (182) and Xavier Carmona (195).

“This is the first time since 1965 that a Hackley wrestling team has won or shared a league title,” Stanek said. “It has been a great season for us, so far. This is the first time in 18 years we’ve had a full lineup.

“My team works hard in the wrestling room every day. They are fully committed and dedicated to the sport. They are a great bunch of young men,” he said.
