School board members will begin to interview candidates in January, with a final selection to take place in February or March. The new superintendent will take office in July 2013.
School officials spent several months in 2012 conducting a search for Superintendent Howard Smith's replacement after he announced his retirement. Smith has been with the district for 11 years.
Officials hired search firm Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates in August to help find a new school administrator, following in the footsteps of area schools like Irvington and Greenburgh.
The search process included a superintendent survey and several community forums.
Parents told search consultants in October that they wanted a leader who would be able to manage a diverse school district through its current challenges. They also said the new superintendent's salary was an important issue when budgets are tight and programs may be cut.
A superintendent characteristics report released in November highlighted the district's unique diversity and said the school community hoped the new leader would be able to bring different groups together.
“People really wanted an educator with a vision,” search consultant Debbie Razies said.
