SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – Being efficient has paid off for the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns.
The school district has received a $55,000 grant after detailing its transportation system, Schools Superintendent Howard Smith said.
“The state government is trying to look for examples of where schools have been efficient and recognize them,” he said.
Grants were awarded to schools with efficient programs that could be promoted and replicated in other places, Smith said. The grant money can be used anywhere in the district.
School officials decided to highlight the district transportation program because of changes in the last few years, such as increasing the number of trips per bus, reducing the number of buses and increasing the walking distance, Smith said.
The grant program will run until 2015. Smith said more funds may come in, but the state has not yet outlined the entire program.
