Tarrytown YMCA Leases Tappan Hill Elementary

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – The Tarrytown YMCA is getting a second home.

The Board of Education of the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns has approved a three-year lease with the YMCA for the vacated Tappan Hill Elementary School.

Superintendent Howard Smith said the lease covers the entire building. The YMCA will be responsible for the building's operational costs and a monthly lease payment, Smith said.

The Public Schools of the Tarrytowns closed the school in 2010 because of budget restraints. The Green Meadow Waldorf School had been leasing two classrooms but decided not to renew its lease this year.

The district has projected it will not need to reopen the building in the next five years because the district's buildings currently in use will be able to handle projected enrollment increases, Smith said.

Tarrytown YMCA CEO Gerry Riera told school board officials the building would be used to expand the organization's child care and after-school programs. Riera estimated the YMCA could expand its child care efforts by 60 percent because the Tappan Hill School has more classrooms than the YMCA building on Main Street.

"It also gives us the opportunity to expand programs at the YMCA [building]," he said.
