Tarrytown Schools Get $323,000 State Grant

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – A $323,000 state grant will help the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns improve its teacher and leader effectiveness, Superintendent Howard Smith said.

“This grant enhances work we're already doing, but don't always have the luxury of funding it,” Smith said.

Officials announced the grant during a recent school board meeting. The State Education Department grant is part of its participation in the federal Race to the Top program and is given to districts who have finalized new principal and teacher evaluation plans.

The grant will be used to improve teacher training and leadership throughout the district, Smith said.

Specific initiatives include partnering with the Edith Winthrop Teacher Center to improve the teacher mentor program, Manhattanville College to offer training at a reduced cost and the Bank Street College of Education to enhance leadership qualities in teachers and administrators.

The grant covers a two-year period ending in 2014.
