District teachers recommend students join the program after they have played an instrument for at least a year and have demonstrated musical ability and a willingness to practice regularly.
MusicWorks provides one-on-one music lessons for low-income students who have shown musical aptitude and enthusiasm for their instrument.
MusicWorks will increase the number of low-income students accepted into elite performing groups such as the Rivertowns Ensembles and All-County ensembles. The school district instrumental music program will more accurately reflect the diversity of the school district. In the long-term, the discipline students learn through regular practice will help them be more successful in school and in their future endeavors. The JCC-on-the-Hudson is MusicWorks’s fiscal sponsor and local partner. The JCC identifies and coordinates private music teachers through their highly regarded School of Music and Performing Arts. MusicWorks is supported by a Year-end Appeal to the community, The Rotary Club of the Tarrytowns, The Foundation for the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns and the UJA-Federation of New York’s Music for Youth program. Families also pay modest amounts toward their child’s musical studies. Contributions are welcome.
