SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. -- Athletes, partners and coaches from Sleepy Hollow High School and Brewster High School have joined forces to compete as a unified basketball team at the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games, being held Saturday, July 25, through Sunday, Aug. 2, 2015, in Los Angeles.

Participating from Sleepy Hollow High School will be coach Kim Kaczmarek; athletes Felix Veloz and Min Li; and partners Hunter Burnett and Brendan Murphy. Participating from Brewster High School will be coach Donna Schneider; athletes Kevin Green, Stephen Booth and Tim Schneider; and partners John Ashley, Jagger Ashley and Yash Patel. Participating from Hudson Valley Special Olympics will be coach Teresa Gilli. The U.S. “home team” will include 304 athletes and 43 Unified Partners competing in 17 sports, 102 volunteer coaches and 42 volunteer sports and management team members, representing all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The team also includes several Special Olympics Unified Sports teams, where people with and without intellectual disability compete together as teammates. Every two years, the world transcends the boundaries of geography, nationality, political philosophy, gender, age, culture and religion to come together for Special Olympics World Games.

Alternating between summer and winter Games, this event is the flagship event of the Special Olympics movement, which promotes equality, tolerance and acceptance through the power and joy of sport. Currently, more than 4.4 million Special Olympics athletes train and compete year-round in 170 nations around the globe.

" I know I speak for all of us on Team USA when I say how very proud and honored we are to have been chosen for this incredible opportunity in which we will be competing as a unified team at the largest sporting event of 2015," said Kaczmarek.

"To represent our country on such a global level and to be demonstrating to the world that we are all more the same than different and breaking down barriers will be an experience we will never forget."
