SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. Sleepy Hollow Middle School has earned national recognition as a Green Ribbon School, the U.S. Department of Education announced Monday.
We are very proud that the efforts of our students and staff in promoting a greener school environment have been recognized at the national level, Superintendent Howard Smith said in a press release.
The Sleepy Hollow school was one of three from New York State and 78 schools nationwide to earn the honor. The award is meant to honor schools that create comprehensive green environments through education and awareness.
"Science, environmental and outdoor education play a central role in providing children with a well-rounded education, helping prepare them for the jobs of the future," U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said. "U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools demonstrate compelling examples of the ways schools can help children build real-world skill sets, cut school costs, and provide healthy learning environments."
Smith said several individual and small-group initiatives with help from enthusiastic staff members earned the school its award.
Young people can become very passionate about being good stewards of the environment, and it is a great lesson for our students to learn that they can make a difference worthy of such recognition, he said.
U.S. Rep. Nita Lowey (D-Westchester/Rockland) said she congratulated the school for its award.
I am proud that Sleepy Hollow Middle School is leading the way on energy efficiency, reducing environmental impact, and ensuring students have the knowledge they need to succeed in the 21st century economy, she said.
