This fellowship, in conjunction with partner sites of the University of Massachusetts at Boston and Montclair State University in New Jersey, supports five local school districts at each of the three sites, through targeted professional development and leadership opportunities for three groups of 20 select teachers.

These teachers support science learning for all students through research-based strategies and lesson study and collaboration. The second group brings together experienced teachers chosen from five partner districts:  East Ramapo Central School District; City School District of New Rochelle; Port Chester-Rye United Free School District; Public Schools of the Tarrytowns; and White Plains Central School District.

Amanda Gunning and Meghan Marrero, of the Mercy College School of Education, were awarded the $1.19 million grant to lead the Greater New York Wipro Science Education Fellowship after beating out local competition for this prestigious, privately funded grant.

Wipro is an international information technology company based in India that serves more than 61 countries. Because of their extensive work in the United States, Wipro funds varied science education innovation projects here.

The SEF will support three groups of 20 science teacher fellows from five local districts for a two-year fellowship during the five-year grant period that focuses on leadership in science education. The goal is to keep good teachers in the classroom and develop their leadership skills within their districts, instead of pulling them out of the classroom for administrative roles.

The first roup of fellows have shared videos of their classroom teaching for reflection, and will be presenting their first year’s research at a June conference at Montclair State.
