THORNWOOD, N.Y. -- Nine Westlake High School students in the Science Research program will participate Saturday in the 17th Annual Regeneron - Westchester Science and Engineering Fair (WESEF) at Sleepy Hollow High School.

WESEF is a local science fair affiliated with the Intel International Science Fair serving budding scientists in Westchester and Putnam counties of New York State.

The annual fair is an amazing display of multi-year projects by the best high school science research students in Westchester and Putnam counties and is the regional version of the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, according to a release from the Mount Pleasant Central School District.

Members of the public are invited to catch the excitement anytime during the day’s events, between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. as well as the awards ceremony, from 7 to 9 p.m.

The students presenting are as follows:

Seniors

  • Peter Psaltakis
  • Meenu Mundackal
  • Xavier Varga
  • Ryan Stasolla

Juniors

  • Charles Panzarella
  • Joelle El Hamouche
  • Isabelle Joseph
  • Zach Lubart
  • Philip Markuszweski

The Science Research program at Westlake High School is a three-year program during which students design, conduct and present research on an original topic, according to the release.

Students begin by reading and studying scientific journals in an area of their interest, then developing initial hypotheses. After securing a mentor in their chosen field to help guide their research, they conduct investigations and collect data over the summer.

The following year, students present their research in a detailed scientific paper and poster board presentation, which they can submit for competition in high-level science fairs and symposiums locally and nationally, the release said.  Lawrence Mcintyre is the coordinator of the Science Research program.

Sleepy Hollow High School is at 210 N. Broadway, Sleepy Hollow.
