Polluted Soil Found At Irvington Athletic Field

IRVINGTON, N.Y. – Contaminated soil has been discovered on the East Field of the middle-high school campus and may require remediation, Irvington school officials have announced.

Initial testing shows there is non-native fill material that includes old pesticides, certain metals such as copper and lead and semi-volatile organic compounds. Some concentrations exceed cleanup objectives set by the state.

“While the test results alone do not indicate that any work on the field will be required, they do mean that further investigation is warranted,” a statement from the Irvington Board of Education said.

School officials found the construction and demolition debris while inspecting the field in preparation for a facility improvement project. The field was immediately closed, the district said. The contaminants appear to be from debris disposed of in the 1960s or 1970s, the school district said.

The district is consulting with the state Department of Environmental Conservation on the testing results.

The district does not anticipate any health risks because the fields remain closed and because the community has been using them for nearly 50 years, the district said.

School officials have posted more information on the soil testing on their website. A special email address has also been created to address the field situation: eastfield@irvingtonschools.org.
