Pocantico Hills Revises School Calendar After Hurricane

POCANTICO HILLS, N.Y. – Students in the Pocantico Hills Central School District will see an additional day of class this year because of Hurricane Sandy.

The school board recently approved several revisions to the calendar. The last day of school will now be June 24 instead of June 21. Students will have half-days on June 21 and 24.

The district remained closed for a week after Hurricane Sandy downed trees and knocked out power in the area. School officials re-opened classes only after clear road conditions allowed them to provide transportation.

The district will use April 30 as a superintendent's conference day to score state exams, which, Superintendent Valencia Douglas noted in a letter to parents, “effectively reduces the total number of days teachers are not teaching students because of having to be trained for and score State tests.”

The eighth-grade graduation ceremony is still scheduled to take place on June 19.
