Pocantico Hills, Irvington Schools Stay Closed Thursday

POCANTICO HILLS, N.Y. – The Irvington Union Free School District and the Pocantico Hills Central School District announced Wednesday they would remain closed on Thursday because of Hurricane Sandy's aftermath. Pocantico Hills added it would remain closed Friday.

Downed wires in the Crest neighborhood of Tarrytown are the only thing keeping the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns closed Thursday, Superintendent Howard Smith said.

The Transfiguration School and the Hackley School have not yet said whether they will open Thursday. The Public Schools of the Tarrytown said it would decide on whether to open by Wednesday evening.

“The only thing keeping us from opening tomorrow is reports of downed wires in the Crest neighborhood that are still live,” Superintendent Howard Smith said. “We will continue to monitor the situation today and will make an announcement about school opening status by early evening.”

Many schools decided to remain closed because of power outages.

Irvington officials noted that Dows Lane Elementary and the Irvington Middle-High School campus had no power. Pocantico Hills said much of its district had power, but the school building did not.

Smith said his district's buildings were fine except Winfield L. Morse Elementary had no power.
