TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – These young performers aim to make a classic Disney hit roar to life.
Students in the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns will perform two versions of “The Lion King” in coordination with the Tarrytown YMCA as part of a pilot program with the Disney Theatrical Group this week and in January, according to YMCA Vice President Barbara Turk.
Fourth- and fifth-graders at Washington Irving Intermediate School take to the stage on Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. and 7 p.m., as well as Thursday at 9:30 p.m. Students are performing a 40-minute version of the musical that has been adapted for elementary schools and is directed by Peter Royston, the Y's theater program director.
Washington Irving and the Harlem School of the Arts were chosen to test the new adaptions before the program is released, Turk said.

Sleepy Hollow Middle School students and Royston are also working on a version of “The Lion King” that is an hour long. Middle school students will perform their version on Jan. 25 at 10 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Both performances are supported by the Foundation for the Public Schools of the Tarrytowns, the MHV Foundation and the Kids' Club of the Tarrytowns.
