Superintendent Kristopher Harrison recommended the suspension because r an ongoing building utilization study means the district might discuss closing the school next year. Harrison said the school would be a focus of the report, especially with declining enrollment and excess building capacity.

“Now, this is just one of a number of considerations, but it seems to me that since we are in a parallel process to recruit a new principal for Main Street School, we are confronted by both a practical and ethical issue given the considerations of the SES study to be discussed,” Harrison said. “In other words, is it both practical and fair to hire a new principal for the school, only to have discussions with our community next year about what form of use the building will adopt going forward?”

Eileen Casey is serving as interim principal for the Main Street School this year, replacing Raina Kor. Kor was promoted to assistant superintendent of instruction and human resources.

The space utilization study is being conducted by Dr. Paul Seversky and his team. The study looks at baseline enrollment data and building usage to find cost efficiencies.

Harrison said no decision had been made on whether to close the school or not, but the study would be a prominent focus next year.

Harrison recommends building consensus on the space study before restarting the Main Street School principal search.
