Irvington Students Learn About Food Production In Stone Barns Center Visit

IRVINGTON, N.Y. -- Fourth-graders from Main Street School in Irvington visited the Stone Barns Center in Pocantico Hills this week for their first of three visits this year. 

Main Street School fourth-graders visited the Stone Barns Center in Pocantico Hills to investigate food production and examine the relationship between farm life and how the harvested food becomes the food we consume.

They investigated food production on the farm, which grows hundreds of varieties of fruits, vegetables, flowers and herbs year-round.

The students were involved with a variety of organized hands-on farm chores to provide them with perspective on how people interact with their environment. 

They examined the relationship between farm life and how the harvested food becomes the food we consume. During the visit, students also learned about different farm animals and their roles in a sustainable farm.

At the end of their visit, they were asked to discuss and reflect on their trip. “We anticipate great excitement and success with this project throughout the year," Main Street School Principal Joyce Chapnick said. “Thanks to the Irvington Education Foundation for funding the three Stone Barns visits.”
