"It was an amazing day in the Irvington schools," Superintendent of School Kristopher Harrison said. "As our students returned to our schools, such positive energy began to flow that will set the stage for a memorable year. Our faculty and staff are excited for a successful year that will be remembered for impressive student growth and achievement."

Teachers at Dows Lane Elementary School and Main Street School greeted their students, helped them organize their school supplies and guided them through their expectations for the year.

"It's great to see my friends again," said fifth-grader Samara Laks. "I really like reading and writing and I'm very excited to do it again in school."

The halls at the Irvington Middle School were buzzing with chatter as eighth-graders teamed with sixth-graders for various first-day-of-school activities designed to help the younger students make a smooth transition into their new school.

Students had a barbecue in the courtyard and later participated in a scavenger hunt that sent them on an adventure around the building looking for clues in the classrooms, library, cafeteria, lockers and principal's office.

"What's exciting about the first day of school is to see my friends, visit my teachers [from last year] and meet new teachers," said eighth-grader Kayleen Burgos, who was helping a group of sixth-graders get familiar with the school as they toured the building on the scavenger hunt.

Meanwhile, Irvington High School students jumped in with a regular full day of classes on the first day of school.
