Irvington Students Battle Math Operations In Integer War

IRVINGTON, N.Y. -- Seventh-graders in Gregg Pernick’s math class turned the classroom into a battlefield when they played Integer War, a fun and interactive card game, as part of their studies at Irvington Middle School in Irvington.

They were given playing cards, of which they had to turn over two and perform the indicated operation. The mathematical operations changed with each round. The rules of the game indicated that black cards were positive and red cards were negative.

Just like the popular card game War, the greater result won all the cards. An integer is a number that contains no fractional component. Pernick said operating with integers is a big part of the seventh-grade unit on number sense.
