The students spent part of the day Friday, Jan. 15, speaking with Irvington Fire Chief Chris DiPaoli and Police Officers Mike Toolan and E.J. Semen about different ways to stay safe at home.
“It was all part of a great lesson presented by some of Irvington’s finest,” sixth-grade teacher Luann Ricciardi said. “Checking your smoke detectors, making an escape plan in case of fire and having emergency numbers readily available were just some of the great pieces of advice shared with the class.”
Ricciardi said her students learned what to do if they’re home alone and presented with an emergency. They also saved the police department’s direct line on their phones and practiced what to do and say if they ever need to call 911.
DiPaoli, who has two daughters in the school district, educated Ricciardi’s students about carbon dioxide and its properties of being colorless and odorless. He told the students that their homes should be equipped with carbon dioxide detectors and that if the alarm ever goes off, they need to get out of their house immediately and call 911.
DiPaoli, Toolan and Semen also talked to the students about the dangers of thin ice and what they can do if they or someone else falls through the ice.
“When it comes to staying safe, we can always count on the Irvington fire and police departments to be there to help out,” Ricciardi said.
