IRVINGTON, N.Y. – Irvington school officials say they're working on a plan historic, non-native fill and construction debris found at East Field last year.

The plan includes “modest excavation” in some places, followed by adding clean soil and capping the field's surfaces.

“Once this plan is finalized, we will certainly share this information with our residents,” the district said in an update on the field. “As to be expected, the field remains closed for all district and recreational use.”

Officials are working with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the New York State Department of Health on the remediation, conducting soil testing confirming that the fill does not pose health risks. Officials say testing has shown that extensive remediation is not necessary.

The contaminated fill is thought to have been dumped in the 1960s and 70s . The district and community has been using the field for almost 50 years without concern, but officials are voluntarily cleaning up the site.

The contaminated soil has slowed discussions of renovating the Meszaros Field and East Field, as the district concentrates on remediation. But officials say those discussions continue.
