Byers, who was inducted with the inaugural team of Master Teachers in 2013, has been with the Irvington School District since 2008. He was hailed for his dedication to the profession.
“Together, with our colleagues at Irvington Middle School, he works to build and maintain a rich and supportive environment for our students,” said David Sottile, the school’s principal.
The program, a statewide initiative that has grown to include 625 teachers, allows educators greater participation in peer mentoring and content-oriented professional development, officials said.
Byers, who in the past two years has led several discussions among his Irvington peers on the topics of Common Core learning standards and ways to bring technology into the classroom, said he’s learned much from his involvement with the program.
“The best part has been the relationships I’ve forged with other talented educators,” he said. “I have learned so much from them.”
Kristopher Harrison, superintendent of schools, said the district is fortunate to have a staff of talented teachers like Byers.
“(He) should be commended for his dedication to ... instructional practice,” Harrison said. “Our students are most fortunate to have him leading such high-quality mathematical learning experiences.”
