Irvington Education Foundation Grants $14,164 To District

IRVINGTON, N.Y. -- The Irivington Education Foundation has granted nine Innovation Fund grants to the district, totaling $14,164 for educational opportunities for district students.

The following people and organizations donated money: $7,500 from an anonymous community member, $2,500 from Sunnyside Bank and $4,164 from the foundation's fundraising efforts.

Last year, the district, in partnership with the foundation and Sunnyside Federal Bank, developed and officially launched the Innovation Fund to foster student opportunities and create an entrepreneurial culture within the district.

The Innovation Fund is geared toward introducing self-motivated, innovative learning experiences for students of the community.

“I, along with the Irvington Board of Education, thank the IEF for their generosity and continued support of our Irvington schools,” Superintendent of Schools Kristopher Harrison said. “Our collaborative partnership with the IEF has been outstanding, and I’m pleased that with their great support, our district can continue to provide students with opportunities to bring their ideas to life and to expand on their learning experiences.”

Below is the full list of grant awards:

  • Art club: Filling unsightly cracks on campus with tile mosaics ($824 grant).
  • Engineering: High school students will introduce Main Street School students to engineering ($975 grant).
  • Game Design: High school students will teach middle school students video game design ($710 grant).
  • Local History Club: Empowering high school students to research and share local history ($900 grant).
  • Latin Club: High school students will teach Latin and Roman culture to middle school students ($750 grant).
  • Project Venture: Students will develop a product and submit it to the TV show “Shark Tank.” Whether or not they make it to the show, they will market their product ($1,500 grant).
  • Tiny homes: Phase one of a multi-year plan to build a "tiny home" on a trailer. There is great support from the District and the student's family in seeking additional (non-IEF) funding for phase two ($3,850 grant).
  • Weather App: Two high school students with a successful weather website will develop a weather app with help from teacher Mr Levine ($2,500 grant).
  • School Play: A very passionate group of students will mount a production of “12 Angry Men,” with enthusiastic support from the District ($2,155 grant).
