Irvington Developing Cleanup Plans For East Field

IRVINGTON, N.Y. – The Irvington school district is working with state officials to develop a volunteer remediation plan for contaminated soil at East Field, officials said.

During a meeting last Thursday, officials at the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) said the state agency would not start any enforcement actions because the historic fill in East Field was dumped before applicable regulations, the school district said. Officials plan to move forward with a voluntary cleanup with the help of the DEC and New York State Department of Health.

“We will follow established protocols and work with the DEC and DOH to their satisfaction,” a statement from the district said. “As a result, East Field will remain closed, pending testing data review and remediation plan approval.”

School officials are waiting for testing results before discussing possible remediation measures. Polluted soil was found earlier in the school year at the practice athletic field. Officials said the contaminated fill is most likely from construction debris dumped in the 1960s and 70s.

School officials do not anticipate any health risks because the field had been in use for almost 50 years without concern.

School officials have posted more information on the soil testing on the district website. A special email address has also been created to address the field situation: eastfield@irvingtonschools.org.
