More than 60 families attended the event, which, due to its popularity, was held twice last month to accommodate the record number of families who registered to attend this special evening.
“The goal of this program is for students to have a deeper appreciation of mathematics while providing enriched learning time through family activities,” math coach Christine Rosner said. “Hands-on activities were used to nurture interest, confidence and success in math. The activities shared during the evening support the Common Core standards and the learning that takes place in the classroom.”
Throughout the evening, parents and children worked together to solve engaging problems that helped build an understanding of the importance of math in everyday life. Some of the mathematical activities focused on addition, composing and decomposing numbers, place value, logical thinking, proportional puzzles, fractions and ratios.
“To see families engaging in mathematical games and learning together elevates this event beyond academics,” Dows Lane Elementary School Principal Deborah Mariniello said. “This is what makes Dows Lane a special place.”
Family Math Night is funded by the Irvington Education Foundation. Thanks to the IEF’s support, each third-grader received a packet containing instructions and manipulatives for the various mathematical activities that were shared during the session.
