As part of the Mount Pleasant Central School District’s ongoing facilities improvement projects, Director of Facilities Eric Strack announced that a notice of intent to abate asbestos after school hours has been posted at Columbus.

Strack said that the abatement work will begin on Friday, June 9, in the school’s boiler and mechanical rooms in the basement. While the work is ongoing, the basement will be off-limits to students and staff.

All work is scheduled to take place between 4 p.m. and 12 a.m., and Strack said that it is expected to last approximately 15 days. During the abatement work, contractors will seal all door openings and exterior grates, in accordance with state regulations.

School officials stated that a contractor has been commissioned to conduct air monitoring during the abatement work to ensure the safety of the building. The results of air monitoring will be reported to Strack and Principal Michael Cunzio each morning at 6 a.m. Parents with questions or concerns can contact Strack at (914) 769-5500 ext. 5910.
