BRONXVILLE, N.Y. The ladies of the Bronxville Library's knitting group have traveled the world, raised families, and held various jobs, but through it all, they have always had a knitting project nearby.
"I always have something, usually more than one knitting project going," said Elizabeth Poirer, of Bronxville.
Poirer, like most in the group, said she learned how to knit when she was very young.
"I learned how to knit when I was 8," said Mt. Vernon resident Debra Formisano. "I didn't learn how to crochet until I was 11."
For the second year in a row, the ladies are working on scarves that will go to the Friars at Graymoor in Garrison who run a homeless shelter for men.
"We plan on finishing this project by December 14, and we will start a new one in January," said Christine Uchtel, a reference librarian in the Bronxville's children's library who is part of the group.
The group was started last year, when they made the first batch of holiday scarves that were delivered to Graymoor. Since then, they have also made baby blankets for children at Blythedale Children's Hospital and have completed smaller projects for other organizations. Next, they intend to knit blankets for the Visiting Nurses of Westchester.
"There are so many very wonderful places and organizations who would like the knitted items," said Uchtel. "It's hard to decide which ones we should contribute to.
In the meantime, Uchtel said there is always room for another knitter or even a donated scarf.
"Anyone who wants to drop off a knitted item is welcome to just bring it to the library," Uchtel said. "We will make sure it gets to someone in need."
