Developers hope the Irvington officials will end an environmental review of the proposed Continuum facility and begin working toward a zoning change in January and February.
The Continuum Company wants to build a 120-bed assisted-living facility at the Foundation for Economic Education site on Route 9 in Irvington, just south of Main Street. The facility would include a special dementia-care unit and offer residents several on-site amenities
The 105,000-square-foot building was modified during the planning process so that some of the building's height is now underground. Developers have also decided that tearing down the existing site and rebuilding a lower building is more practical.
“We went back and took a hard look at the plan and the issues that have come up continuously throughout the public hearing process,” said Scott Aaron, Continuum executive vice president. “We decided that it was time to have a new architect take a fresh look at the property and the plan, and attempt to create something that mitigated those impacts.”
Resident Barry Graubart and some of his neighbors banded together to form the “Protest Irvington from Overdevelopment” group after Continuum proposed its new facility. Graubart and others said they thought the project was too massive and would negatively affect the village.
