TARRYTOWN, N.Y. Public outcry over the proposed demolition of Tarrytown Honda has brought changes in the proposed project and the dealership, owner Dwight Dachnowicz said during a recent Planning Board meeting.
The car dealership wants to tear down its existing building and construct a two-story building with 75,000 square feet of space that would include more room for mechanics and car storage. The Tarrytown Planning Board is expected to close the public hearing on the project during its July meeting.
Project officials followed a request by the Planning Board and found LED lights that would work at the new dealership, Dachnowicz said. The LED lights would last longer and direct light down and not into neighbors' windows, he said.
In response to neighbors' complaints about traffic congestion on Sheldon Avenue and Walter Street, Dachnowicz said he leased a storage site in Rockland County where all car carriers would be directed to drop off vehicles. Cars would be shuttled to Tarrytown Honda as needed.
Planning Board officials agreed to allow up to 10 car carriers to drop off cars at the dealership but only in emergency situations. The new building would also improve on-site unloading if car carriers were dropping off at the dealership, Dachnowicz said.
Tarrytown Honda also agreed to a no-left-turn sign and a no-U-turn sign at Walter Street and Sheldon Avenue that would prevent any traffic from the dealership, including customers test driving cars, from turning into the neighborhood.
Neighborhood residents said they were still concerned about car carriers and other traffic at the dealership. Alison Boldyrev said she would prefer that car carriers are banned from neighborhood streets.
"Ten seems to be a little bit of a stretch," she said, referring to the possible number of car carriers.
Planning Board Chairman Stanley Friedlander said the only outstanding issue on the project was the traffic flow, including documentation about the off-site storage lot and how cars would move within the new dealership.
